Men's Soccer Off To Stellar Start In First Four Spring Matches

March 24, 2008

SEATTLE - Washington men's soccer is off to a strong start in its 2008 spring campaign, going 2-0-2 in its first four matches without allowing a goal thus far.

The Huskies' wins included a 5-0 victory over the UW alumni (March 7) and a 1-0 victory over the Portland Timbers' tryout team (March 15). The pair of scoreless draws came in a March 1 doubleheader with Trinity Western and the University of British Columbia.

Redshirt-freshman goalkeeper Stephen Fung played a role in all four shutouts. He shared minutes in the net with sophomore Ryan Nichols in the draws with Trinity Western and UBC. Fung then paired with sophomore Rylan Hawkins in shutouts over the UW alumni and Portland Timbers. The March 7 match marked the first appearance for Hawkins since suffering a season-ending facial injury back on Sept. 14, at New Mexico.

Sophomore midfielder Daniel Phelps leads UW after four games with six points on one goal and four assists. Freshman forward Beau Macaluso and senior midfielder Steve Mohn each have two goals to their credit.

Both of Macaluso's scores came in the 5-0 win over the UW Alumni, while Phelps added one goal and three assists in the match. Additional goals were scored by junior midfielder George John and Mohn.

Mohn had the gamewinner against the Portland Timbers, which was assisted by Phelps.

The Huskies have five more matches on their spring slate, beginning with a double-header on Saturday, April 5 versus the Portland Timbers (11:15 a.m.) and the University of Portland (1:45 p.m.). Both contests will be held at the University of Portland.
