SEATTLE, Wash. - The top-ranked Husky men's varsity eight capped an exciting day of racing with a impressive victory over the second-ranked California Golden Bears this morning on Montlake Cut in the annual Washington-Cal dual regatta. The Huskies also won the men's junior varsity race and the women's novice event on a beautiful sunny morning in Seattle.

"This is a really huge win," said men's varsity eight stroke Will Crothers after the race. "UW is such a big part of my life and this rivalry is such a big part of UW."

Although Cal started the day with a win in the varsity four, the UW novice eight raced through the 2,000-meter course to take a 17-second victory over the Bears in the second race. Heather Young, who rowed in the six-seat for the novice boat today, described her first UW-Cal rivalry race as, "overwhelming. I'm from Virginia, so I've never seen a cut that full! It made me want to pull even harder."

In the next two races, California came out on top, as the freshmen men's eight crossed the finish line just ahead of the Huskies, and then the Bears junior varsity women took first place.

The Huskies posted a 1.9-second victory in the men's junior varsity eight, but the race was close throughout. UW coxswain Micah Perrin noted, "Cal shot out a little early around 1,000 meters and it looked like we lost about a half a length, but we stayed composed and we hit our stride and everything clicked. Our last 20 strokes were probably our strongest strokes of the race."

In the women's varsity eight race, the 12th-ranked Cal crew topped the 11th-ranked Huskies, winning with a time of 6:47.1.

In the final race of the day, the Husky men's varsity eight, ranked No. 1 in the nation, faced No. 2 California. The Huskies, who now lead the all-time series against the Bears 67-29-1, had lost the last two dual races against Cal, were focused on securing a win today. Despite a choppy start, the Huskies took control of the race and sophomore coxswain Katelin Snyder helped her boat to a full boat-length victory over the Bears with a time of 5:58.3.

Crothers also added, "It was a little survival-mode at the start, but we kept pushing and executed a few moves. They had one really big move, but Katelin called it and we took off."

Next week, the Huskies will help Seattle celebrate Opening Day as Washington hosts the Windermere Cup. The featured varsity eight races will showcase the Huskies as they take on Purdue Univesity and New Zealand's Waikato University. Racing will begin at 10 a.m. next Saturday, May 5 along the Montlake Cut.
